A 21-year-old man by accident shot a 1-year-old boy whereas altering his diaper in a South Shore house earlier this month, police say, after a gun he saved contained in the baby’s diaper bag grew to become tangled and discharged, prosecutors say.
Chicago police initially responded to a report of a kid shot within the 7700 block of South Yates shortly after 2 p.m. on November 8. Officers discovered the toddler with gunshot wounds to his left and proper legs, and EMS took him to Comer Youngsters’s Hospital in vital situation, a CPD report mentioned.
In keeping with police, 21-year-old Torion Stokes first informed officers that an unknown man tried to power his means into the house and opened fireplace, placing the kid. After listening to conflicting accounts, investigators took Stokes in for questioning, recovering a 9mm handgun from his entrance left pocket as they took him into custody, in line with charging paperwork.
Later that night, Stokes allegedly gave a distinct account. Prosecutors mentioned he admitted he carries a gun contained in the baby’s diaper bag. As he set the bag on the mattress and started pulling out garments whereas attempting to alter the boy’s diaper, the firearm grew to become tangled contained in the bag and discharged, placing the kid, prosecutors mentioned.
A search of the house turned up extra weapons and equipment, in line with police. Officers reported discovering one other handgun in Stokes’ bed room together with a drum journal in a hallway closet. In a separate bed room, they allegedly discovered a second drum journal, a second handgun, and a field of ammunition.
Courtroom data present Stokes is at present in a “first-time weapon offender probation” program tied to a 2023 illegal use of a weapon case. If he completes that probation efficiently, the 2023 matter can be dismissed and not using a conviction.
Stokes is now charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, baby endangerment, and possessing ammunition and not using a legitimate FOID card. Choose Susana Ortiz ordered him detained pending trial.
