Paris Hilton has opened up about the harsh and unkind remarks she and Britney Spears endured during the early 2000s, highlighting how these experiences forged their resilience. Both women, now 44, bonded over the challenges of early fame, which Hilton described as a deeply isolating ordeal that few others could truly understand.
Reflecting on Past Harshness
In a recent conversation, Hilton shared memories of reuniting with Spears in Mexico for her birthday just weeks ago. They discussed the intense negativity they faced from the public eye. “We were just talking about how cruel and mean-spirited people were back then,” Hilton recalled. “And she is someone that can relate to that. Very few people can. It has made us both so strong.”
The Protective Persona
Hilton explained that her well-known “dumb blonde” image from The Simple Life served as a form of emotional armor. She developed this character as a response to the overwhelming scrutiny that came with sudden stardom at a young age. “I think that everyone just saw me as that character because that’s how the world got to know me,” she said. “And I also played into it even more which I didn’t even realize till later on as like a trauma response from everything that I went through.”
This persona acted as a mask to shield her from the pain of constant judgment. “Just to have the whole world you know watching picking me apart just like, it was very difficult,” Hilton added. “So, I think having that character, it really, it saved me from a lot of pain because when people would be mean or say things like I’d be like, ‘Oh, it’s not me. It’s just the character.’”
Changes and Ongoing Challenges
While Hilton acknowledges that public discourse has improved over the past two decades, she believes some negative patterns persist, particularly toward young female celebrities. She expressed concern for emerging stars like 21-year-old Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown, who has faced similar backlash.
“You know, it has changed so much, but then there still is those people who just can’t help themselves,” Hilton noted. “And I just feel like they’re not happy with themselves if they’re going to, you know, tear down these young women.” She emphasized her commitment to advocating for change. “And that’s why I continue to use my voice to make a difference and to point that out to others. Hopefully things will change the more people do that.”
Hilton praised Brown’s handling of fame, calling her “brilliant” and “strong.” The two stay in touch regularly, and Hilton was inspired by Brown’s recent defense against critics. “I have so much respect for Millie. I love her so much,” she said. “I’m just so impressed with her in every way. And I’m feel so proud of her. I told her right when I saw that she stuck up for herself, I was like, ‘Wow.’ Like I wish I could have done that back in the day.”
