David Robertson Announces Retirement from Baseball

David Robertson, a World Series champion with the New York Yankees, has announced his retirement after a distinguished 17-year career in Major League Baseball. The 40-year-old reliever, who earned All-Star honors once, played for eight teams across his professional journey.

Robertson secured his place in baseball history by contributing to the Yankees’ 2009 World Series victory. His career also included stints with the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, Miami Marlins, and Texas Rangers. He returned to both the Yankees and Phillies for multiple seasons, showcasing his versatility and reliability from the bullpen.

Career Highlights and Personal Reflections

In a heartfelt social media post shared on Friday, Robertson expressed gratitude for his experiences in the sport. “To all the incredible organizations, teammates, coaches, staff members, and fans who have been part of my baseball journey, I’ve decided it’s time for me to hang up my spikes and retire from the game I’ve loved for as long as I can remember,” he wrote.

Robertson highlighted key achievements, including his World Series win, an All-Star appearance, a gold medal in the World Baseball Classic representing the United States, and a silver medal from the Olympics. He appeared in 881 games over his career, with his standout performance coming in 2011 for the Yankees, where he recorded a 1.07 ERA across 70 appearances.

“Baseball has given me more than I ever dreamed possible over the last 19 seasons,” Robertson continued. “I’ve had the privilege of playing alongside amazing teammates, learning from outstanding coaches, and being welcomed into organizations that felt like family.”

He extended thanks to support staff and fans, crediting their passion for motivating him daily. Robertson reserved special appreciation for his family: “Most importantly, thank you to my wife and children. Your love, sacrifice, patience, and dedication made this career possible.”

Looking Ahead

As he transitions out of professional baseball, Robertson looks forward to spending more time with his family, managing their farms, and expanding High Socks for Hope, a nonprofit that assists families recovering from disasters. “Saying goodbye isn’t easy, but I do so with deep gratitude for every opportunity, challenge, and memory,” he concluded. “I’ll forever be thankful for the game and for everyone who made this journey extraordinary.”
