Inter Miami Bolsters Attack with Berterame Signing
Inter Miami CF has signed Mexico national team forward Germán Berterame from Liga MX club Monterrey as a Designated Player. The contract extends through the 2029 season, with an option for an additional year. The club activated Berterame’s $15 million release clause to finalize the transfer.
Berterame joins forces with Lionel Messi and the defending MLS Cup champions, adding a dynamic goal scorer to the roster. The move strengthens Miami’s offensive lineup ahead of upcoming competitions.
Berterame’s Farewell and Excitement
In a video shared on Monterrey’s social media, Berterame reflected on his departure. “I’m leaving with a clear conscience, knowing I always gave my all for this club, and I hope I can return further down the road,” he stated.
Expressing enthusiasm about the new chapter, Berterame added, “This opportunity is all new; it’s a unique and fresh experience at the same time. It was unexpected, but I think it’s going to be a beautiful experience.”
He also shared an anecdote from his contract renewal with Monterrey’s sporting director Héctor Lara: “When I renewed my contract, I told him, ‘I’m not leaving unless something really eye-catching comes along.’ I was obviously talking about teams from Europe. And I also said, ‘Unless, obviously, Messi comes and takes me with him.’ So that anecdote stuck.”
Career Background and International Impact
The Argentine-born forward, who gained Mexican citizenship in 2024, began his professional career in Argentina’s Primera División with San Lorenzo and Patronato. He moved to Liga MX in 2019, debuting with Atletico San Luis, where he netted 31 goals across 93 appearances in all competitions. His standout performance earned him the Golden Boot for the 2021 Apertura tournament.
Berterame’s Liga MX success led to his call-up for the Mexican national team, for which he became eligible after limited youth appearances with Argentina. No FIFA one-time switch was required. Recently, he delivered the decisive goal in Mexico’s World Cup qualifying friendly victory over Bolivia last Sunday.
Prior interest from other MLS clubs, including FC Cincinnati, surfaced earlier, but negotiations stalled when they could not agree on terms to trigger his previous release clause.
