Renowned actress Catherine O’Hara passed away at age 71 following a medical emergency at her Los Angeles home. Emergency responders arrived after reports of breathing difficulties, transporting her to a hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The exact cause of death has not been released publicly.

Emergency Response Details

Dispatch records indicate that O’Hara experienced severe breathing issues early Friday morning. Paramedics responded to her Brentwood residence around 4:48 a.m., addressing a call for medical aid involving an approximately 70-year-old woman in serious condition. She was quickly taken to a nearby medical facility but succumbed within hours.

Prior to her passing, O’Hara appeared frail during her final public appearance at the Emmy Awards in September. She had also been absent from the Golden Globes on January 11, despite a nomination for best supporting actress in television for her role in the satirical series The Studio, which she co-created with Seth Rogen.

Resurfaced Reflections on Her Final Moments

In a 2013 questionnaire that has recently gained attention, O’Hara shared a lighthearted vision of her death. She expressed her desire to pass away “laughing, surrounded by my old grandchildren, who are telling me to ‘let go, already, Grandma!’” This poignant response contrasts sharply with the sudden reality of her departure.

During the same questionnaire, O’Hara identified her greatest love as “my family,” highlighting the deep bonds that defined her personal life.

Family and Professional Legacy

O’Hara is survived by her husband of nearly 34 years, production designer Bo Welch, whom she met while working on the 1988 film Beetlejuice. The couple raised two sons, Matthew, 31, who works as a set dresser, and Luke, 28, involved in set construction—both following paths in the entertainment industry.

She also leaves behind siblings including Michael O’Hara, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Maureen Jolley, Marcus O’Hara, Tom O’Hara, and Patricia Wallice.

O’Hara’s career spanned decades, earning acclaim for roles in films like Home Alone and After Hours, as well as television staples such as SCTV and Schitt’s Creek. Her versatile performances made her a beloved figure in comedy and drama.

Health Condition and Personal Insights

Throughout her life, O’Hara managed a rare condition known as situs inversus, where internal organs are ed from their typical positions. Her heart, located on the right side, was discovered during tuberculosis testing required for one of her sons’ nursery school enrollment.

In a 2021 interview, she addressed the condition with her signature humor: “I’m a freak, yeah!” She elaborated, “I love Western medicine but I just don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t even know the name because I don’t want to know the name. Something cardi-inversa and then dexter-cardia and something-inversa.” O’Hara added, “People are going to think I’m so ignorant not to know this, but I kind of don’t want to know because I didn’t know before that.”

Outpouring of Tributes

News of her death elicited widespread grief from the entertainment community. Macaulay Culkin, who co-starred with her as his on-screen mother in Home Alone, shared heartfelt condolences. Brooke Shields, whom O’Hara impersonated on SCTV in the 1970s, also mourned the loss.

Colleagues from The Studio, including Seth Rogen and Ike Barinholtz, along with Schitt’s Creek co-star Dan Levy and Beetlejuice actor Michael Keaton, paid tribute to her talent and warmth. Director Martin Scorsese, who directed her in the 1985 comedy After Hours, appeared visibly distraught in a social media-shared FaceTime image captured by his daughter Francesca.
