Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates appeared relaxed at the Australian Open on Saturday, watching the women’s singles final alongside his girlfriend, Paula Hurd. The outing comes shortly after newly released documents from the Jeffrey Epstein case alleged involvement with Russian women and a sexually transmitted disease.

Gates and Hurd have been visible at Melbourne Park throughout the tournament week. On Thursday, they occupied premium seats at Rod Laver Arena, taking in the high-stakes matches. They returned Saturday for the showdown between Belarusian star Aryna Sabalenka and Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, soaking in the atmosphere of the prestigious event.
The couple’s presence highlighted Gates’ interest in the sport, providing a contrast to recent scrutiny over his past associations.
Response to Epstein Document Allegations
A spokesperson for Gates dismissed the latest claims in the Epstein files as “absolutely absurd and completely false.” The statement emphasized that the documents only reveal Epstein’s frustration over the lack of an ongoing relationship with Gates and his attempts to entrap and defame him.
The U.S. Department of Justice faces ongoing pressure to disclose sealed files linked to the late financier, who died in a New York jail in 2019. Gates has previously acknowledged regretting his meetings with Epstein but has consistently denied any improper conduct.
The most recent batch of redacted files, released Friday, includes a 2013 email Epstein drafted to himself, seemingly intended for Gates’ then-top advisor, Boris Nikolic. The message references Gates’ request to delete emails about an STD, antibiotics to give to his then-wife Melinda, and a description of his anatomy. It also expresses Epstein’s dismay at Gates ending their six-year friendship, calling the decision incomprehensible.
Gates has long distanced himself from Epstein, admitting the association was a mistake but rejecting all related accusations.
