Urban explorers recently made a startling discovery while venturing through the Middleton mine in the Derbyshire Dales. Two anonymous adventurers stumbled upon a forgotten film set deep underground, featuring remnants that point to major Hollywood productions.
Unexpected Find in the Depths
The site includes a vintage blue and white American coach, a raised platform, a vehicle hoist, a touring caravan, and detailed blueprints for lighting setups. Investigators believe this setup served as a filming location for the 2025 Marvel blockbuster The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Production insiders reportedly confirmed these details to the explorers during their visit.
One of the explorers described the moment of discovery: “I typically seek out unique artifacts, but coming across an entire film set was unprecedented. We were navigating with our flashlights when we entered this constructed area, complete with an old American bus parked right there.”
Further details revealed scaffolding supporting lighting rigs, alongside a map outlining precise light placements. The setup also featured an elevator car positioned oddly in the middle of a pathway and a stage in front of the bus. Additional equipment included various machinery for assembly, as well as a cabin equipped with a microwave and kettle. Pipes were installed throughout to maintain air quality, addressing potential radon gas hazards in the mine.
“It was surreal to encounter this film set—it caught us completely off guard,” the explorer continued. “I understand that scenes for The Lord of the Rings and Mission: Impossible were also shot in this location.”

The Fantastic Four: First Steps stars Pedro Pascal in the role of Mister Fantastic, leading the film to a global box office haul of $521.9 million and strong audience reception. The story unfolds in a 1960s setting, following the superhero family as they balance their powers and personal lives against threats from the cosmic entity Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer.
The ensemble cast features Vanessa Kirby as the Invisible Woman, Mister Fantastic’s empowered partner; Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch; and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing. This installment represents Marvel’s latest effort to adapt the iconic family, succeeding earlier versions from 2005, 2007, and a 2015 reboot.
Representatives from Disney have not yet commented on these findings regarding the rumored filming site.
