Jury Duty Returns with a Fresh Twist
The popular Amazon Prime series Jury Duty, which captivated audiences with its innovative mockumentary format, is set to launch a new spinoff titled Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat. This follow-up shifts the setting from a courtroom to a corporate environment, maintaining the show’s signature surprise element where one unsuspecting participant navigates a world of actors.
In the original 2023 season, construction worker Ronald Gladden arrived for what he believed was routine jury duty, only to find himself at the center of an elaborate fake trial. Surrounded by actors posing as fellow jurors, including actor James Marsden playing an exaggerated version of himself, Gladden became an instant fan favorite for his genuine reactions and camaraderie.
Details on the Company Retreat Spinoff
The new season centers on Anthony, a temp worker invited to the annual retreat of a fictional hot sauce company. Unaware of the setup, Anthony interacts with a cast of actors in various team-building scenarios, mirroring the deceptive premise of the first series. A teaser trailer released this week features Anthony’s voice expressing disbelief, stating, ‘If I go home and tell my parents about this stuff, they’re going to be like: “You’re lying.”‘
Ronald Gladden, who kept the original show’s secret for 14 months—even from his family—shared the trailer on Instagram, teasing fans with a post that read: ‘Before anyone tries to get information out of me, just know that I kept Jury Duty a secret for 14 months, even from my family, so you just gotta wait.’ Gladden is slated to appear in the spinoff, adding continuity to the franchise.
James Marsden, a highlight of the first season for his humorous self-portrayal, serves as an executive producer but will not appear on screen. The production team includes notable names such as David Bernad from The White Lotus, Lee Eisenberg from Lessons in Chemistry, and Gene Stupnitsky from The Office.
Filming and Release Schedule
Filming for Company Retreat took place in Agoura Hills, a Los Angeles suburb, last year. The series draws inspiration from The Truman Show, the 1998 film where Jim Carrey’s character lives an unwitting life broadcast as reality TV.
The first three episodes premiere on March 20, followed by two more on March 27, and the final three on April 3. Early fan responses have been enthusiastic, with viewers calling the original a ‘great experiment’ and expressing excitement for the corporate-themed sequel.
Impact and Legacy
The debut season propelled Gladden into the spotlight, earning him a $100,000 prize and a two-year development deal with Amazon MGM Studios. Company Retreat marks his first project under this agreement, potentially launching Anthony’s career in a similar fashion.
