In Montreal’s vibrant Parc-Extension neighborhood, a community center is opening doors for recent immigrants by highlighting their tailoring talents and easing their transition to life in Canada. The Alter-Mode program, hosted at the Brique par Brique community center on the last Saturday of each month, allows skilled seamstresses and tailors to repair, modify, and repurpose donated clothing for local residents.

How the Program Works

Participants bring in used garments, and the women apply their expertise to mend or transform them. Donors contribute a cash amount based on the repair time or materials required, providing an affordable way to refresh wardrobes. Project coordinator Arman Faruqui explains that these funds go straight to the seamstresses. “We’re thrilled to create an income source for them, letting them pursue what they love while earning with respect,” Faruqui stated.

Building Confidence Through Shared Experiences

Community coordinator Harjinder Kaur draws from her own journey to inspire participants. Having arrived in Montreal from India as a former teacher, Kaur sought ways to integrate and give back after discovering Brique par Brique. After volunteering for months, she secured a position there. “I always tell them, I was just like you not long ago,” she shared. “Soon, you’ll be where I am today.” Now, Kaur guides others toward similar opportunities for growth and contribution.

Promoting Sustainability and Community Ties

Beyond economic support for immigrants and refugees, Alter-Mode fosters eco-friendly fashion practices through alterations, upcycling, and a monthly clothing swap. Eugenia Leavitt, who visited with her daughter, appreciates the focus on reuse. “We avoid discarding clothes,” she said, noting how swaps help update outfits sustainably. Leavitt also enjoys observing the seamstresses’ craftsmanship. “It’s fascinating—they repair, restyle, and add unique flair,” she added.

Local resident Laura Mousaraganyi joined to donate items and engage with neighbors. “I value any chance to build connections and ensure newcomers feel included in society,” she remarked.

Looking Ahead

Faruqui envisions expanding Alter-Mode with additional events to amplify its impact on both participants and the broader community.
