Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper participates in several commemorative events in Ottawa this week, marking the 20th anniversary of his Conservative government’s swearing-in on February 6, 2006.

Monday’s Gold Medal Award and Discussion

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society presents Harper with its gold medal on Monday afternoon, recognizing his distinguished public service career, including his role as Canada’s 22nd prime minister. The ceremony is followed by a fireside chat with former Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, who received the society’s gold medal in 2022 alongside former Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Tuesday’s Portrait Unveiling

On Tuesday afternoon, officials unveil Harper’s official portrait at the Sir John A. Macdonald Building in downtown Ottawa. Canadian artist Phil Richards, known for portraits of notable figures such as former Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz, former Ontario Premier Bob Rae, and the official Canadian Diamond Jubilee portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created the artwork.

Friday’s Gala Dinner

A gala dinner on Friday celebrates the 20th anniversary of Harper’s government. The organizing committee includes former chiefs of staff Ian Brodie and Ray Novak, as well as former Conservative Senator Nicole Eaton.

In a social media statement on Sunday, Harper expressed excitement about his Ottawa visit. “I’m excited to be in Ottawa this week and looking forward to seeing so many friends and former colleagues from across our great country,” he said. “We’re grateful for the chance to reconnect and celebrate our government’s 20th anniversary with everyone!”

Harper served as prime minister for nine years and eight months before his defeat in the 2015 federal election by then-Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.
