A 16-year-old teenager was violently assaulted by a group of 14 masked individuals while walking with a friend in Newcastle. Authorities confirm the January 2023 attack began when assailants noticed the victim’s designer streetwear, including a £250 jacket.

Witnesses report the group surrounded the victims after making comments about the clothing. Despite attempts to avoid confrontation, the teen was pinned against a fence and repeatedly punched in the face, sustaining a split lip. The attackers allegedly threatened stabbing before stealing the jacket, a £600 iPhone, and a £50 bag.

The youth described the trauma in an impact statement: “I was attacked and made to feel my life was threatened by a much larger group. I’ve been injured physically and emotionally.” He emphasized being a teenager simply enjoying an evening out when targeted.

Prosecutor Daisy Wrigley outlined how four assailants initially blocked the victims’ path while ten others followed behind. When the pair changed direction, the larger group intercepted them near St Mary’s Place. Authorities noted no passing vehicles were present to provide assistance during the attack.
Robbery Connections to Drug Offenses
The investigation took a significant turn when 19-year-old Mohammed Moufareh was spotted wearing the stolen coat shortly after the robbery. Forensic analysis later revealed his fingerprints on the victim’s phone, found concealed under a rock near the civic centre.
Subsequent Criminal Charges
In November 2023, undercover officers observed Moufareh conducting a suspected drug transaction near Haymarket Metro Station. During arrest, police discovered a Fruit Shoot bottle containing ammonia and £100 worth of crack cocaine. Mobile evidence showed bulk messages advertising drug sales.
Sentencing and Judicial Outcomes
Moufareh pleaded guilty to multiple charges including robbery, intent to supply Class A drugs, and possession of an offensive weapon. The court acknowledged his juvenile status during a June 2022 robbery when determining sentencing. He received a total prison term of four years and eight months.
Co-defendant Kalalu Berhane, 20, received a 12-month community order after being convicted of handling stolen goods related to the earlier robbery.
