Liverpool’s Quiet January Window Nears Climax

Liverpool have maintained a low profile during the January transfer window, focusing primarily on youth development amid ongoing defensive challenges. As the 7pm deadline approaches on Monday, the club eyes potential late moves to reinforce the squad for the season’s remainder.

Youth Signings and Academy Focus

The only incoming addition this month is 18-year-old defender Mor Talla Ndiaye, who joins the academy from Senegalese side Amitie FC. While this move addresses long-term needs rather than the immediate injury crisis—exacerbated by the failure to sign Marc Guehi before his transfer to Manchester City—the young talent shows promise for future contributions.

Outgoing Deals and Recalls

Several youth players have departed on loan to gain experience. Luke Chambers heads to Charlton Athletic until season’s end, while Lewis Koumas transfers to Hull City after an early termination of his Birmingham City loan. James Norris secures a permanent move to Shelbourne Rovers.

In returns, James Balagizi comes back from Forest Green Rovers after injury setbacks, and Owen Beck rejoins from Derby County, where he saw no action due to fitness issues.

Defensive Reinforcements in Sight

With Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giovanni Leoni sidelined, Liverpool prioritize defensive options. Discussions have centered on a loan for versatile defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who previously worked under manager Arne Slot at Feyenoord. Currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, Geertruida’s ability to play across the backline and midfield makes him an ideal short-term fit.

However, securing the deal requires RB Leipzig to end the Sunderland loan, with Liverpool negotiating alongside both clubs. Sunderland would need a replacement and compensation, complicating matters. Liverpool’s preference for loans over permanent January deals aligns with this approach, though prospects for completion appear slim as Sunderland resists releasing him.

Summer Planning and No Senior Exits

A more concrete arrangement involves 20-year-old defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, with a pre-agreement for £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons set for summer. This reflects strategic forward planning despite the £450 million summer spending limiting winter activity.

No senior players will leave before the deadline. Reports of Inter Milan’s interest in Curtis Jones via a loan-to-buy (£35 million) option have been dismissed. Academy prospects Kieran Morrison and Wellity Lucky—who debuted in the EFL Cup—may seek loans for first-team exposure.

Despite Joe Gomez’s fitness struggles, he remains a key squad member and is unlikely to depart, even after near-misses like a potential 2024 swap with Newcastle involving Anthony Gordon.

Deadline Day promises excitement across the Premier League, with Liverpool poised for any last-minute developments to shore up their defense.
