Warning: Contains Major Spoilers for ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’

The latest episode of the Game of Thrones prequel series delivered a haunting prophecy about young Egg’s future, confirming his identity as Aegon V Targaryen while foreshadowing his grim fate.

A Fateful Encounter

During their travels, Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) encountered a mysterious seer who revealed the boy’s royal lineage. The fortune teller declared Egg would become king but warned: “You shall die in hot fire” and “worms shall feed upon your ashes.” She concluded with the chilling statement: “All who know you shall rejoice in your dying.”

The Path to Kingship

Historical records from Westeros confirm Egg eventually ascended the throne as Aegon V, nicknamed ‘The Unlikely’ due to his unexpected rise. Originally fourth in line behind brothers Daeron, Aerion (Finn Bennett), and Aemon (Peter Vaughn), Aegon claimed the Iron Throne after his father Maekar’s (Sam Spruell) death when his elder siblings either died or renounced their claims.

The Tragedy of Summerhall

Aegon V’s reign ended catastrophically during the infamous Tragedy of Summerhall. While attempting to hatch dragon eggs to strengthen his rule, a devastating fire consumed the Targaryen castle. The blaze claimed the lives of Aegon, his Lord Commander Duncan the Tall, and his eldest son Prince Duncan.

A Divided Legacy

The prophecy’s final statement about rejoicing in Aegon’s death reflects historical accounts of his controversial reign. His children’s refusal of politically strategic marriages angered powerful Westerosi houses, creating resentment that lingered long after his fiery demise.

The series continues on HBO and streaming platforms in the US and UK, with new episodes exploring this pivotal era in Westerosi history.
