Kimberly Van Der Beek, wife of the late actor James Van Der Beek, seeks donations through a GoFundMe campaign to ease the family’s financial strain from his cancer treatment. The Dawson’s Creek star passed away on Wednesday at age 48 following a battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer, first disclosed in November 2024.
Fundraiser Quickly Exceeds Goals
Friends launched the GoFundMe shortly after news of his death emerged. The campaign reached its original $500,000 target within four hours, organizers then raised it to $700,000, and donations have now surpassed $1 million.
The fundraiser description highlights James Van Der Beek as a cherished husband, father, and friend whose illness brought both emotional hardship and severe financial pressure. “In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children face an uncertain future,” it states. “The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family without funds.”
Prior Efforts to Offset Treatment Expenses
James Van Der Beek previously addressed treatment costs by auctioning wardrobe items and memorabilia from Dawson’s Creek and his 1999 film Varsity Blues in November 2024. “100 percent of my net proceeds will go to families recovering from the financial burden of cancer (including my own),” he announced at the time.
Kimberly posted the GoFundMe link on her Instagram, noting friends created it to “support me and our children during this time.” She accepted the help “with gratitude and a broken heart.” Funds will cover essential living expenses, bills, and the children’s education.
Career Highlights and Family Background
In September 2025, Michelle Williams hosted a Dawson’s Creek cast reunion for a live charity reading of the series’ first episode, benefiting F Cancer. James Van Der Beek planned to participate but withdrew due to two stomach viruses. He joined via video message, introducing replacement Lin-Manuel Miranda and thanking supporters.
James met producer Kimberly during a spiritual trip to Israel; they married in Tel Aviv in 2010 and raised four daughters and two sons together.
Tributes from Peers and Fans
Condolences flood in following his passing. Sarah Michelle Gellar commented on Kimberly’s Instagram post: “I’m so sad for your beautiful family. While James’ legacy will always live on, this is a huge loss to not just your family but the world. F*** Cancer.”
Chad Michael Murray added: “Sending love and light to your beautiful family. James was a giant. We’re so so so sorry for what you’re going through. His words, art and humanity inspired all of us – he inspired us to be better in all ways. God bless you guys.”
