York Knights launch their Super League campaign against Hull KR at a nearly sold-out LNER Community Stadium tonight at 8pm. The team aims to secure their first victory over the reigning champions since 1999, marking their return to the top flight after 40 years.

Applegarth Drives Ambitious Mindset

Head coach Mark Applegarth urges his players to push beyond mere participation. “I don’t think it’s about me,” he stresses. “It’s about the whole city, and York should feel proud.”

Applegarth emphasizes that pride alone falls short. “We don’t want to be proud just because we’re in Super League—that’s not our mentality,” he states. The club cherishes its privileged position, given its journey over the past 20-30 years and rich rugby league heritage from the Wasps era.

Now, the focus shifts to action. “As a team, we want to get after it,” Applegarth declares. “We’ve banged the drum for years to reach Super League. It’s time to enjoy what comes every single week on this journey.”

Balanced Squad Blends Experience and Youth

York retains the core from last year’s 1895 Cup and Championship League Leaders’ Shield winners, bolstered by key recruits. Former NRL player Paul Vaughan scored on his debut against Barrow, while second-rower Josh Griffin, recently from Wakefield, prepares for significant minutes.

Emerging talents like Championship Young Player of the Year Jack Smith and prospect Will Roberts promise growth. Applegarth values this mix: “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t massive. The perfect blend includes experience.”

He highlights excitement for Super League newcomers and the energy from youth. “Any coach wants older heads for guidance, a hungry middle group to prove themselves, and young players who push boundaries,” Applegarth explains. “Inexperience becomes a blessing—they’ll test limits.”

Veterans like Paul Vaughan, one of the top props, pair ideally with rising stars such as Jack Martin. “That’s a nice blend,” Applegarth notes. “Exciting times ahead—we’ll enjoy it, get into them, and show what York Knights stand for all season.”
