Easter approaches, and Marks & Spencer dives into the season with fresh hot cross bun launches. The retailer, known for its iconic buns since 1975, introduces innovative flavors to its baked goods lineup.

New Hot Cross Bun Flavors Launching February 18

Marks & Spencer releases two new varieties: Red Velvet and gluten-free Apple & Brown Sugar. Both hit shelves on February 18.

The Red Velvet buns feature vivid red dough infused with cocoa powder, studded with Belgian dark chocolate chips and a smooth white chocolate filling. Priced at £3 for four, the retailer suggests enjoying them straight from the pack like doughnuts.

The Apple & Brown Sugar buns belong to the Made Without Wheat range, offering a gluten-free option at £2.80 for four. They contain juicy fruit soaked in orange juice, candied apple pieces, and a unique spice blend.

Tasting Notes from an Early Trial

These gluten-free buns expand M&S’s popular free-from selection, following recent additions like the gluten-free Colin the Caterpillar cake. They boast an enticing aroma and visually match regular buns. Sliced open, they reveal a denser texture.

Toasted and buttered, the flavor differences fade. Generous fruit chunks, balanced spice, and subtle sugary apple notes deliver a delicious result.

The Red Velvet buns echo last year’s popular Dippy Egg variety with rich chocolate dough. However, the white chocolate filling offers a creamier, icing-like consistency rather than custard. Limited filling prevents overwhelming sweetness, while dark chocolate chips add bitterness. Chocolate lovers may devour multiples, though it falls short of predecessors for some palates.

Full M&S Hot Cross Bun Lineup

M&S offers 11 flavors total, including returning favorites. Standouts include Extremely Lemony Curd Filled buns with candied Sicilian lemon peel and zesty curd filling, praised as a game-changer by shoppers last year.

Heat to Eat Cinn-A-Yum Buns return with soft cinnamon dough, butter enrichment, white icing drizzle, and cinnamon sugar topping.

Other options: Luxury Fruited Hot Cross Buns (regular and mini), Collection Two Fruited, Granny Smith Apple, Extremely Cheesy, Extremely Chocolatey, Millionaire’s Mini, and standard Made Without buns.
