During Benfica’s 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League play-off first leg, Vinicius Junior sparked controversy after scoring the decisive goal. The Brazilian winger netted a stunning curling shot from outside the box in the 50th minute, then celebrated with a dance by the corner flag at Estadio da Luz. Home fans responded by throwing objects, leading to a yellow card for the forward after he appeared to taunt them.

Tensions Escalate Over Alleged Racial Abuse

Tensions boiled over when Argentine player Gianluca Prestianni made a comment, prompting Vinicius to claim racial abuse. The match paused for 10 minutes amid the dispute. As Vinicius headed to the bench, Benfica manager Jose Mourinho spoke directly to him.

Mourinho’s Post-Match Comments

In his post-match press conference, the 63-year-old Mourinho addressed the incident. “Unfortunately, he was not just happy to score that stunning goal. When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way,” Mourinho stated.

Responding to questions about potential conflict after the goal, he added: “Yeah, I believe so. I want to be independent, I don’t want to say I believe Prestianni and don’t believe Vini because they said two completely different things. I want to be independent, and I don’t comment about it.”

Mourinho revealed his exact words to Vinicius: “I told him exactly that. I told him, ‘When you score a goal like that, you just celebrate and walk back.’ When he was arguing about racism, I told him, ‘The biggest person in the history of this club [Benfica] was black. This club, the last thing it is, is racist. If in his mind it was something in relation to that, this is Benfica.'”

Mourinho Faces Suspension for Second Leg

Mourinho received a red card after protesting a yellow for leaving his technical area and questioning officials late in the game, as Benfica pushed for an equalizer. He will miss the second leg at the Bernabeu.

This clash contrasts sharply with their prior league-phase meeting, where Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin’s 98th-minute goal secured play-off qualification in a 4-2 win.
