Queer Eye star Karamo Brown urges fans to stop forcing relationships with those who fail to recognize their worth, drawing from his own experiences of abandonment.
Brown’s Emotional Video Message
The 45-year-old reality star shares a candid plea in a recent video, seated on his kitchen counter while eating farro. He reveals years of forcing friendships due to a lack of paternal love stemming from his father’s homophobia.
“Stop forcing connections in people who don’t see the value in you!” Brown states. “I grew up without the love of my father… his homophobic a** couldn’t see past my sexual orientation and now he’s missing out on this amazing son!”
Brown explains how this abandonment triggered him to cling to unbalanced relationships, pleading, “No, no, no, stay… I can show you that you can love me.” He warns that such dynamics leave people depleted and unhappy.
“Is there anybody in your life that you’re forcing a connection with? You show up for them, you give to them, but you never get that back? … That’s your sign.”
He emphasizes self-love, insisting others must match his energy or elevate. Brown distinguishes between being alone and lonely, offering friendship to those feeling isolated.
Fab Five Rift Comes to Light
Last month, Brown withdrew from two promotional interviews for Queer Eye’s latest season alongside co-stars Jeremiah Brent, Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France, and Antoni Porowski. He cited years of feeling mentally and emotionally abused.
During a CBS Mornings appearance without Brown, host Gayle King addressed his absence. The co-stars appeared somber as King read Brown’s statement:
“I hope everyone remembers the main theme I have tried to teach them over the past decade, which is to focus on and to protect their mental health and peace from people or a world who seek to destroy it; which is why I can’t be there today.”
King noted Brown’s assistant mentioned fears of bullying. The co-stars offered tense, cryptic responses, fueling speculation.
Origins of the Conflict
Sources indicate the tension arose during Queer Eye season 10 filming over the summer. Brown’s mother, visiting the set, overheard Porowski, Van Ness, and France criticizing his lifestyle choices via headphones while he was absent.
She informed her son, igniting a feud. Brown maintains a positive relationship with newest member Brent, but ties with the others have frayed.
