The Socceroos gear up for their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a key friendly against co-hosts Mexico at the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, on May 31 AEST.

Match Details and Atmosphere

This clash at the 90,000-capacity venue, which hosted the 1994 World Cup final and the 1999 Women’s World Cup final, serves as the final audition for players before coach Tony Popovic finalizes his squad. Expect a sell-out crowd dominated by passionate Mexican fans, creating a hostile environment that mirrors the intensity of their group stage opener against a co-host nation.

Australia and Mexico have met six times since 1970, with the Socceroos securing two wins, three draws, and one loss. Their most recent encounter ended in a 2-2 draw in Arlington, Texas, in September 2023 under previous coach Graham Arnold.

Coach Popovic’s Statement

“This will be one of our final friendlies before our opening FIFA World Cup match in Vancouver against one of the UEFA Playoff winners,” Popovic stated. “It is also the last opportunity for players to impress before the final 2026 World Cup squad list must be submitted to FIFA. Mexico is a quality opponent and, having automatically qualified as co-hosts, every friendly is crucial for them. We look forward to this match, which promises a wonderful atmosphere at an iconic stadium.”

World Cup Schedule and Preparations

Squad sizes remain unconfirmed at either 23 or 26 players. The Mexico game offers a vital test for established stars and fringe players alike. Following the match, the team relocates to their Bay Area base for final preparations.

Australia sits in Group D, facing the UEFA Playoff C winner—Turkey, Romania, Slovakia, or Kosovo—on June 14 AEDT in Vancouver, the United States on June 20 in Seattle, and Paraguay on June 26 in Santa Clara.

Earlier send-off matches include Cameroon at Sydney’s Accor Stadium on March 27 and Curacao at Melbourne’s AAMI Park on March 31. The tournament kicks off on June 12 AEST with Mexico versus South Africa. All 104 matches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico air live and free on SBS.
