A 61-year-old grandmother from St Albans, Hertfordshire, fell deeply in love with a 26-year-old Egyptian pastry chef she met on TikTok, only to face heartbreak after spending £4,000 on their long-distance romance.

Unexpected Online Connection

Jacqueline Dube, a mother of three and grandmother of three, connected with the man from Alexandria, Egypt, during a TikTok live session with her niece. He complimented her appearance, calling her “beautiful,” leading to an exchange of numbers and daily WhatsApp conversations despite the 2,500-mile distance and 35-year age gap.

Within minutes of messaging, he expressed a preference for older women. Jacqueline recalls questioning herself: “I began asking myself ‘why have I fallen in love with a 20-something man?'” Over 16 months, they spoke every day, and she met his family via video calls. He even told them about plans to marry before meeting in person.

First Trip and Growing Bond

In September 2025, Jacqueline flew to Egypt for an eight-day visit, staying with his family. She describes deepening affection: “I would smell his smell, sometimes we’d lie together hugging. We would listen to music together.”

Family members traveled to meet her, and they enjoyed boat trips and meals, many of which she paid for. Initial cultural differences faded as he repeatedly affirmed his love, swearing by Allah. “He made me feel special and wanted,” she said.

Proposal and Mounting Doubts

Jacqueline returned in November 2025, greeted by a rented limousine and flowers. During this trip in December, he proposed, and they began planning a wedding in Cairo. However, back in the UK, the £4,000 spent on travel, gifts, and accommodation weighed heavily.

Raising financial concerns strained the relationship. Cultural, financial, and geographical barriers proved insurmountable. Jacqueline ended the two-month engagement, stating, “I thought he saw me for who I was. He told me he loved me to the moon and back. Now I know that I don’t have what I thought I had.”

Aftermath and Reflections

Heartbroken and in debt, Jacqueline struggles with bills after a decade alone. “I still cry thinking I’ll never see him again,” she admits. “I’m in debt. I’ve not been able to pay my bills. I developed some sort of weird attachment to him.”

Despite his later attempts to reconcile after unblocking her, she refuses to restart. When approached for comment, the man responded: “This woman is crazy.” Jacqueline blames herself: “You can’t help who you love, but I blame myself. I should never have got on that plane.”
