Inmates at HMP Frankland, the high-security facility known as Monster Mansion, broke into cheers and chants upon learning of double child killer Ian Huntley’s death. The 52-year-old died a week after a brutal attack in the prison workshop.

Prison Celebration and Huntley’s Reputation

Word of Huntley’s passing spread quickly through the jail, triggering widespread celebration. Prisoners had routinely demanded three cheers each morning for Anthony Russell, the convicted murderer who allegedly struck Huntley with a metal bar. These cheers often included football-style chants.

A prison source described Huntley as one of the most despised inmates due to his arrogant demeanor and self-perceived celebrity status. “Every morning prisoners would shout ‘is he dead yet’ followed by ‘three cheers for Russell,'” the source noted. “Huntley was loathed by virtually all prisoners. Even those who committed horrible crimes faced less hostility. No one at Frankland will mourn his loss.”

Details of the Fatal Attack

Huntley suffered severe head injuries during the February 26 workshop assault, leaving him unconscious in a pool of blood. He was rushed to hospital amid chaos at the County Durham prison. Brain scans later confirmed a vegetative state, leading medics to withdraw life support on March 6. His mother, Lynda, 71, was the only family member present.

A source close to the situation stated: “No one who dealt with him sheds a tear. Even his mother accepts this is for the best. He never recovered from the beating, and such an outcome seemed inevitable given his history of attacks.”

Russell reportedly struck Huntley at least 15 times while shouting, “I’ve done it! I’ve killed him!” as officers intervened.

Official Statements and Investigation

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson confirmed: “Ian Huntley, 52, died in hospital following an incident at HMP Frankland on February 26. A police investigation continues, with a file prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service.”

The Ministry of Justice added: “The murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman remain one of the most shocking cases in our nation’s history. Our thoughts are with their families.”

Huntley’s Criminal History

Huntley received a life sentence for murdering 10-year-old girls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, who disappeared from a Soham barbecue in August 2002.

Past Violence in Prison

This was not Huntley’s first assault at Frankland. In 2010, inmate Damien Fowkes slashed his neck with an improvised weapon, causing a 7-inch wound needing 21 stitches. Fowkes asked officers, “Is he dead? I hope so,” calling Huntley a notorious child killer. Earlier, at HMP Wakefield, serial killer Mark Hobson scalded him with boiling water.
