Jack Draper notches his first career win over Novak Djokovic, advancing his Indian Wells title defense with a thrilling 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory in a match exceeding two and a half hours.

Match Breakdown

Djokovic captures the first set 6-4 in a tight battle. Draper fights back, converting a break point early in the second set. The Serb responds with a break of his own, but Draper holds firm from 40-0 down in the eighth game.

A searing forehand winner secures three break points for Draper at 0-40 in the next game. Djokovic nets a shot on the first, yielding the break. The world No. 1 saves two set points before Draper’s ace levels the match.

In the decisive third set, Djokovic shows signs of fatigue after grueling rallies, including a 26-shot exchange. Draper earns two break points following another marathon point and converts to take the lead.

Serving for the match, Draper falters with a wide backhand, double fault, and mishandled drop shot. Djokovic breaks back brilliantly with a drop shot. In the tiebreak, a long backhand and netted shot from Djokovic hand Draper the pivotal win.

Draper, now facing Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals, shares in his on-court interview: “Just an incredible feeling. I’m out here against Novak, to me the greatest tennis player there is, and someone I’ve been admiring and watching since I was a little kid. So to do that, I was just incredibly proud of myself. It gives me so much confidence. I still don’t feel like I’m playing anywhere near the way I want to play. I came out here tonight and I won that match through determination and trying to problem solve and do my best and have a great attitude.”

Kartal’s Injury-Hit Exit

British No. 2 Sonay Kartal’s impressive run ends in retirement against Elena Rybakina in the last 16, trailing 6-4, 4-3 amid back troubles.

Kartal overcomes earlier pain to defeat Emma Navarro and Madison Keys. Broken early, a net cord on her top costs another break at 5 games. She breaks back after physio treatment and pressures Rybakina to force a set.

The second set stays on serve until 3-3, when Kartal stretches uncomfortably on break point and retires.

Rybakina comments courtside: “Definitely not the way I wanted to finish the match, of course (I wish her a) speedy recovery. It’s not easy these kind of injuries. It was a tough match anyway… I’m glad I’m through to the next one.”
