Robert Baloucoune, nicknamed the ‘Cat’, seized his long-awaited opportunity in the Six Nations match against Italy. The 28-year-old Ireland wing delivered a standout performance on his tournament debut—and first Test since November 2022—scoring a try in a tight 20-13 victory. Coach Andy Farrell hailed it as one of the best tries during his tenure, and Baloucoune earned man-of-the-match honors.

Overcoming Injuries and Doubts

Baloucoune admits he believed his Test career was ‘probably’ finished. Persistent injuries to his hamstring, back, and ankle limited him to just two appearances for Ulster last season. Meanwhile, Mack Hansen and James Lowe secured the starting wing spots for Ireland.

Fortune favored him when Hansen suffered an injury, ruling him out of the tournament. Following Ireland’s disappointing 36-14 loss to France, Farrell selected Baloucoune, who has since impressed with another dynamic display in the 42-21 win over England.

The Origin of ‘The Cat’ Nickname

Willie Anderson, who trained Baloucoune at the Ulster Academy, coined the nickname. ‘I christened him ‘The Cat’,’ Anderson explained. ‘He was so laid-back he could curl up and have a snooze whenever he liked. But my God, when he woke up…!’

Personal Background and Family Support

Born in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, Baloucoune has Senegalese roots through his late father, Martial, and Northern Irish heritage from his mother, Shirley. His father excelled in football but pursued university studies in Marseille instead of a professional career. ‘He was good but he was forced to go to university,’ Baloucoune shared. ‘He definitely fell out with my grandparents but study comes first, that’s what he was told to do.’

Baloucoune balanced football and Gaelic football in his youth before switching to rugby at age 15. ‘I just switched over because my mates played it,’ he said. ‘So I joined them.’

Shirley actively supports her son’s career and attended his man-of-the-match game against Italy. ‘She hadn’t been down obviously in a while and she was buzzing,’ Baloucoune noted. ‘She’s gotten well into rugby, so she’s trying to give me tips and stuff like that, which I hate, but it’s funny. Mostly about catching the football and tips and tricks that I should be doing.’

Gearing Up for Scotland Challenge

Baloucoune enters Saturday’s Triple Crown decider against Scotland with momentum—both teams eye the title if France falters against England. He aims to tighten his defense after missing a tackle on Wales prop Rhys Carre, who charged toward the try line. ‘Fair play to the big man, he was flying as well,’ Baloucoune acknowledged. ‘So yes, missing tackles is something I’ll try and cut out of my game.’

Scotland’s wings Kyle Steyn and Darcy Graham pose a tough test. ‘They’re two class wingers and know how to score and that’s probably a main focus of every winger,’ Baloucoune said. ‘So if you’re doing that, you’re doing well and it’ll definitely be a challenge for the weekend, but for myself, I’m looking forward to the challenge.’
