Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips will miss Wales’ Under-21 World Cup play-off campaign after coach Craig Bellamy excluded him from the 26-man squad announced Tuesday.

Phillips’ Dual Eligibility Background

Born in Salford with a mother from Swansea, the 20-year-old earned caps for Wales at under-16 level in 2021. He later switched to England youth teams, accumulating over 30 appearances. Despite recent overtures from Wales, Phillips remains committed to the Three Lions for now.

Currently on loan at Stoke City, where he has made more than 70 appearances across two spells in the Sky Bet Championship, Phillips sits out the key semi-final against Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 26 in Cardiff.

Play-Off Pathway to Glory

The winner advances to face either Italy or Northern Ireland at home on March 31, securing a spot in this summer’s Under-21 World Cup across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Wales last qualified for a major youth tournament four years ago, their first World Cup appearance since 1958.

Injury Blows Hamper Ambitions

Several senior stars’ injuries complicate Wales’ push. Captain Ben Davies, Tottenham’s centurion with 100 caps, broke his ankle in January, jeopardizing his involvement if the team advances. Centre-back Chris Mepham and striker Kieffer Moore also miss out with hamstring problems.

Boost from Key Returns

Positive developments include Wrexham goalkeeper Danny Ward’s return after a four-month elbow dislocation layoff—he joins three other keepers in the squad. Full-back Rhys Norrington-Davies and Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo, despite limited starts this season, also earn recalls.
