An RCMP corporal in the Northwest Territories has pleaded not guilty to a sexual assault charge in territorial court.
Charge and Investigation Details
Derek Young faces the charge, which authorities filed in November 2025. The investigation into his conduct started nine months earlier. With no independent oversight agency in the territory, the Calgary Police Service led the probe.
Officials note the alleged incident occurred in Yellowknife while Young was off duty. Authorities suspended him with pay following the charges.
RCMP Statement on the Matter
“We take these allegations and our commitment to transparency very seriously,” stated Dyson Smith, chief superintendent for the N.W.T. RCMP. “Public trust is essential for N.W.T. RCMP to effectively fulfill its mandate.”
Young’s next court appearance is scheduled for April, with no trial date set yet.
