Today show meteorologist Dylan Dreyer has filed for divorce from her husband of 12 years, Brian Fichera, after their separation earlier this year. The 44-year-old submitted the divorce papers on March 10, with custody details for their three sons still pending.

Family Background and Separation Announcement

Dreyer and Fichera share sons Calvin, 9, Oliver, 6, and Russell, 4. The couple, who married in Boston in October 2012, first met in the 2000s while working at the same news station there. Their friendship evolved into romance shortly before Dreyer began co-anchoring Weekend Today in New York City.

Dreyer shared their separation decision in a July Instagram post, noting the split occurred months earlier. “For many years, I have shared my family with you all – the highs and lows. The ups and downs. And all of the blessings and beautiful memories in between,” she wrote. “I am incredibly grateful for the support and love you’ve given me through it all. For that reason, I want to share with you that a few months ago, Brian and I made the decision to separate.”

She emphasized their ongoing friendship: “We began as friends, and we will remain the closest of friends. Most importantly, we will continue to co-parent our three wonderful boys together with nothing but love and respect for one another.”

Insights from the Today Show

During a November episode of Today, Dreyer addressed the split with co-host Jenna Bush Hager. “I appreciate everyone’s comments that have spoken up about my life and our decisions and what we have decided as a family,” she said. “There’s something freeing, I think, for Brian and I, where – whatever reasons, whatever broke in a marriage – you could either fix it if you can, and ideally you would, and you try, and you try to fix things. Or you accept that it’s broken and you take this new step forward.”

Dreyer explained they could not repair their marriage but chose to reframe it for their children. “I’m not mad at those other things that I was getting mad at before because, just like a friend, you give them a little more grace when you’re not married to it. And I can be a better friend than a wife,” she added.

Explaining the Change to Their Children

The mother of three described telling her eldest son, Calvin, about the separation. “I said, ‘What do you think a family is?’ And he said, ‘Well, it’s a group of people that love each other.’

“And I said, ‘That’s what we are. And we will always be that for you. But Mommy and Daddy work better as friends than as husband and wife,'” she shared. “And he doesn’t care about a title. He doesn’t care what we are officially – none of them do. They are surrounded by love every single day.”
