Good Morning Britain hosts delivered a heartfelt tribute to Mel Schilling, the esteemed Married At First Sight expert, after her husband Gareth announced her passing at age 53 from cancer on social media. The diagnosis first emerged in 2023.

Tribute on Good Morning Britain

During the March 25 broadcast, entertainment correspondent Richard Arnold celebrated Mel’s enduring impact. He stated: “Known as the matriarch of the show, Mel matched and guided couples from their wedding day, offering expert advice and support along the way.”

The segment included a pre-recorded clip from Lauren Dunn, a contestant on season 11 of Married At First Sight Australia, filmed in 2023 amid Mel’s initial diagnosis. Lauren reflected: “Now, looking back, you could see that Mel was sick during filming, and the way she pushed through and sat there, she was always so professional and kind and smiley.”

Lauren continued: “It feels like everything has happened super quickly; it’s really devastating. She had a really good sense of humour. She always had a good laugh with me when I would say outlandish things. I think the world is really lucky they got to have Mel as their mum, she was like the mother of Australia and the UK. I know she was so loved in the UK and I think she’s really left her mark on the world and on MAFS as a show, she’s irreplaceable in my opinion.”

Arnold referenced additional tributes, including one from Davina McCall, and concluded: “Our thoughts, of course, are with Mel’s family at this sad time, quite the legacy she left there.”

Mel Schilling’s Cancer Journey

After her 2023 colon cancer diagnosis, Mel achieved remission following treatment. However, a February routine scan detected nodules in her lungs, signaling the cancer’s spread.

The disease later progressed to the left side of her brain, causing severe headaches and numbness on her right side. In a candid social media update, Mel shared: “Despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do. Hearing those words changes everything. So that’s where I am now. My light is starting to fade – and quickly.”
