Chelsea’s record-breaking midfield signings, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, have delivered sharply contrasting messages about their long-term futures at the club.
Caicedo’s Firm Commitment
Moises Caicedo, who arrived from Brighton in a £115 million deal in 2023, faces interest from Real Madrid. Despite Chelsea’s challenging campaign, he affirmed his dedication during an appearance on Spanish television. “I want to become a Chelsea legend,” Caicedo declared. “I’m under contract at Chelsea, and my focus is on Chelsea and Ecuador.”
Fernandez Leaves Door Ajar
In contrast, teammate Enzo Fernandez, signed for £106 million three years ago, responded to similar speculation from Real Madrid. “No, honestly, nothing,” he stated. “Zero talks. Now we’re focused on Chelsea and what’s left of the last few games this season, and then we’ll see after the World Cup.” His reference to discussions post-World Cup in the US this summer suggests openness to a potential departure.
Strong Contract Positions
Chelsea holds leverage in any negotiations thanks to lengthy contracts. Caicedo’s agreement extends to 2033, while Fernandez has six years remaining. Any suitor would need to pay a substantial fee to prise either player away from Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez on Managerial Sacking
Fernandez previously voiced frustration over the dismissal of manager Enzo Maresca. “I don’t understand it,” he said at the time. “Sometimes as a player, there’s things we don’t understand and the way they try to manage things. I don’t have an answer for you because I don’t know.” He added, “Obviously, it was a departure that hurt a lot because we had a lot of identity, he gave us order but it’s the way that football is, sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad. But we always had a clear identity when it came to training, playing and obviously his departure hurt us especially in the middle of the season – it cuts everything short.”
Interim boss Liam Rosenior has struggled to win over supporters so far. Chelsea exited the Champions League and now fights for a spot in next season’s competition.
