Manchester United have entered the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero this summer. The 27-year-old Argentina international appears poised to leave Spurs after publicly criticizing the club’s leadership earlier this season.

Rival Interest Heats Up

Atletico Madrid retain strong interest in Romero ahead of the transfer window. They attempted a deal last year but declined to meet Spurs’ €55 million (£47m) asking price. Spanish reports indicate Atletico plan a fresh bid, while Real Madrid also monitor the defender as they seek reinforcements in central defense.

Manchester United’s pursuit creates significant competition for Atletico, complicating their efforts to secure the player.

Key Contract Clause

Romero’s contract features a special release clause that permits a departure to Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, or Barcelona for a €60 million (£52m) fee this summer.

Simeone’s Praise

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has voiced his admiration for Romero. Speaking before his side eliminated Spurs from the Champions League this month, Simeone stated: “I speak from a point of view as an Argentina fan. I admire his personality, his character, his defensive work and his football ability on the ball. As a fan of Argentina, I have seen him play more games for the national team than I have for Spurs, but I’m a big fan of him, for sure.”

Romero’s Focus

Following Tottenham’s Champions League exit, Romero emphasized his commitment to the current campaign. “The truth is that I’m focused on the situation we’re in,” he said. “I have a lot of respect and affection for the club and I want to finish the season in the best way possible. We’ll see later but the most important thing now is to recover energy.”
