James Tolkan, celebrated for his iconic portrayals of Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy and Commander Tom ‘Stinger’ Jardian in Top Gun, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 26, at his home in Saranac Lake, New York. He was 94 years old. The news appeared on the official Back to the Future website, with the cause of death not yet revealed.

Personal Life and Family

Tolkan leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Parmelee, and three nieces. The couple first met on the set of the 1971 off-Broadway production Pinkville, where he starred and she served as a prop girl. They wed later that year in Lake Placid.

Early Life and Path to Acting

Born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan faced early challenges when his parents divorced. At age 14, he cycled through Chicago and settled in Tucson, Arizona, graduating from Amphitheater High School in 1949. He briefly served in the Navy during the Korean War and attended colleges including Coe College and the University of Iowa. With just $75 in his pocket, he headed to New York City, worked on the docks, and later trained at The Actors Studio under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.

Distinguished Career Highlights

Tolkan dedicated 25 years to New York theater before transitioning to film. He collaborated frequently with director Sidney Lumet in projects like Serpico (1973), Prince of the City (1981), and Family Business (1989). In 1983, he relocated to California and Canada for WarGames.

His standout roles include the stern Mr. Strickland across the Back to the Future films (1985, 1989, 1990), evolving from the principal to his grandfather in the third installment. He also commanded attention as Stinger opposite Tom Cruise in Top Gun (1986). Other credits feature a dual role in Woody Allen’s Love and Death (1975) as Napoleon and his double, plus appearances in The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), The Amityville Horror (1979), Wolfen (1981), Masters of the Universe (1987), True Blood (1989), Opportunity Knocks (1990), and Dick Tracy (1990). He continued working in film and television until 2011.

Recent Losses in Back to the Future Cast

Tolkan’s death follows closely after fellow Back to the Future actor Matt Clark, who died at 89 on March 15 from complications after back surgery. Clark passed at his home in Austin, Texas, as confirmed by his wife, Sharon. He gained fame for his memorable turn as Chester the Bartender in Back to the Future Part III alongside Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, and Mary Steenburgen.
