Charlie Dimmock often skipped bras under her t-shirts, embracing a natural look during demanding garden work. This carefree style earned her the playful nickname “Horticultural Viagra.” She also revealed a preference for going without underwear. In a 1996 interview, she stated: “I only wear underwear if I have to get undressed in front of someone. So no bra. And no knickers either. But if I do wear knickers, they’re sort of Marks and Sparks 12-14s, because I cannot abide tight knickers. I find thongs quite uncomfortable as well. So I’m better without knickers altogether.”

In 2000, the opening of a garden featured on Charlie’s Garden Army faced delays due to loyalist threats. The project at St Columb’s Park Reconciliation House in Londonderry united people from both community sides. Staff reported threatening calls protesting a Sinn Fein mayor’s involvement. Director Wayne Ford noted receiving warnings of pickets and vandalism. He explained: “We have had dozens of people from both sides of the community working in the garden and putting their hearts into it. There is a real sense of disappointment because everyone was looking forward to the opening and the party as a final climax and now there is a tremendous feeling of deflation and disappointment.”
Affair with Co-Star
Charlie Dimmock ed no regrets over her affair with a Ground Force co-star just before splitting from long-term partner John Mushet in 2001. The relationship with microphone operator Andy Simmons surfaced publicly, and she later confirmed they had parted ways. In 2002, she reflected: “But I don’t regret what happened. You wouldn’t do anything if you kept worrying about what might go wrong. John and I had been together for a long time so when we split up, I relied heavily on family and close friends. I’ve discovered that the most difficult after-effect of the break-up is getting into another relationship.” She then dated another crew member, sound technician Barry Smith.
