On the morning of February 11, 2012, ahead of Clive Davis’s prestigious pre-Grammys gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, R&B star Brandy Norwood woke with an unusual sensation—a hot, radiating itch in her throat. This eerie feeling, unlike typical hoarseness, filled her with foreboding that would soon prove tragically accurate.
The Rehearsal Encounter
Brandy, who rose to fame in the 1990s with her powerful vocals and starred alongside Whitney Houston in the 1997 remake of Cinderella, prepared to perform “It All Belongs to Me” with Monica—their first collaboration since the Grammy-winning “The Boy Is Mine.”
Whitney Houston arrived explosively at the rehearsal, damp from a recent swim, exuding energy mixed with unpredictability. “Baby girl!” she called to Brandy, watching the duo run through their classic hit before giving a quick thumbs-up and departing.
About an hour later, Houston returned with her daughter, Bobbi Kristina. Amid whispers from onlookers, she slipped a crumpled note into Brandy’s hand, whispering, “This is for you,” followed by a tender kiss on the cheek.
The Private Note’s Mystery
