Bruno Fernandes remains one of Manchester United’s standout performers, delivering eight goals and 17 assists across all competitions this season. At 31, the midfielder thrives in top form and contends for PFA Player of the Year honors, strengthening his ties with the club and fans.

Recent Speculation and Saudi Interest

Uncertainty over Fernandes’ future peaked under Ruben Amorim’s tenure, when officials considered a high-value transfer to Saudi Arabia. Tensions arose briefly, but the Portugal international has since regained stability.

Sources indicate Al-Hilal from the Saudi Pro League eyed a £100 million bid last year, paired with a £700,000-per-week contract—positioning him among global top earners. United weighed the offer amid financial constraints, though Fernandes felt deeply affected by the prospect. The formal proposal never materialized, allowing the captain to stay and forgoing a potential club-record sale.

Key Contract Details

Fernandes’ current deal expires in 2027, with a 12-month extension option. A lesser-known £56.68 million release clause exists, activatable solely by foreign clubs. While this figure may discourage European suitors given his age and resale value, Saudi teams face no such barrier.

Al-Hilal’s interest stemmed from urgency ahead of last year’s Club World Cup, predating the clause’s activation. Fresh pursuits from the Middle East loom this summer.

United’s Shifted Stance

Despite wage bill pressures—Fernandes earns £300,000 weekly—the club now prioritizes retention. Officials have directly assured the player of their commitment, aiming to dispel doubts. His comfort has grown since Michael Carrick assumed charge in January.

United plans contract extension talks if Fernandes commits long-term, underscoring his pivotal on-pitch role.
