A 21-year-old college student from Missouri, Melissa Oelke, was discovered deceased in Illinois following an intensive weeklong search.
Disappearance Details
Melissa Oelke vanished after leaving her home in St. Peters, Missouri, on March 26. She departed around 7:30 a.m. without her cell phone. Authorities located her abandoned vehicle on Keck Road in St. Jacob, Illinois, later that same day around 12:30 p.m.
Her father, Gerald Oelke, explained that Melissa had faced stress following midterms at the College of Creative Studies, a private art and design institution in Detroit. She had chosen to extend her spring break to prioritize her mental health. On the day she disappeared, she visited several stores, including Target, Schnucks, and Walgreens.
Police described her last known outfit as an olive-green hooded sweatshirt, denim jeans, and black athletic shoes. Alerts highlighted her several medical conditions requiring ongoing care, heightening concerns for her safety.
Search and Recovery
Rescue teams deployed K-9 units, drones, and aerial support in a massive effort to locate her. Oelke’s body was recovered on Saturday.
The investigation continues, with no reported threat to the public. Officials urged the community to keep her family in their thoughts during this challenging period and expressed gratitude to those who shared information and offered support.
Separate Incident in New York
In a unrelated case, authorities recovered the body of 15-year-old Graceline Ilogene from New York City’s East River on June 4, one week after she entered the water. She was last seen on May 30 near Roosevelt Island with a friend. That same day, two additional bodies surfaced in the 16-mile waterway.
