British audiences cherish game shows for their witty hosts, knowledge challenges, and high-stakes drama. Hits like The Chase and Pointless draw thousands of contestants, but many winners endure long waits—or miss out entirely—on their cash prizes.
Deal or No Deal
Janet Swannell, a children’s entertainer, secured £8,000 on ITV’s Deal or No Deal. Prize money remains legitimate, yet access requires patience. From her car, she shared on TikTok: “I have a loud mouth and it was not an easy secret to keep. Lots of people are asking ‘when did you get your winnings?’ The answer is not a simple one.”
Contestants choose between receiving funds six weeks after the episode airs or six months after filming, whichever arrives first. Swannell recorded in November 2024, with her episode airing in January 2026. She collected her winnings around May 2025 but stayed silent for over 12 months to avoid legal issues with ITV.
The 1% Club
Daniel O’Halloran, 24, triumphed over 99 rivals to claim £100,000 on ITV’s The 1% Club in 2022. Strict rules mandate payout via cheque weeks after broadcast, leaving him waiting nearly a year to surprise his family.
He outlined plans for the windfall: “I’ve got to be sensible, maybe look towards the house, pay the mortgage off. But I’ve got to enjoy it as well. I can’t take this for granted.”
Channel 5’s 5 Second Stars
Quiz veteran Tony Fillingham, 51, from Cheshire, boasts wins like £2,700 on Tipping Point and £45,000 on Tenable. However, his £23,000 victory on Kate Garraway’s 5 Second Stars yielded nothing—the episode never aired.
Fillingham stated: “I never saw a penny of my £23,000 winnings from 5 Second Stars—all because the show never aired.”
The Traitors
Stephen Libby and Rachel Duffy made history as the first Traitors duo to split the £95,750 prize fund from BBC’s season four—£47,875 each. During a January appearance on This Morning, host Cat Deeley posed viewer questions: “How many times have you checked your banking app since the final? Has the money landed in your accounts yet?”
Libby laughed: “It’s not in there yet. But, yeah, I’m not checking because I just want to get a nice surprise when it finally comes in. But yeah, not yet.” He revealed plans for new jumpsuits and financial breathing room after quitting his job.
