Broncos fullback Reece Walsh demonstrates remarkable grit by assisting stranded motorists to push-start their vehicle, just hours after hospitalization for a fractured cheekbone sustained in Brisbane’s 26-12 victory over Gold Coast.

The Injury and Immediate Aftermath

Walsh celebrated his 100th NRL match with a spectacular try in the first half, but suffered a category-one concussion while tackling Titans forward Kurtis Morrin near halftime. He exited the game and headed straight to the hospital for scans below his eye.

While receiving treatment, Walsh recorded a video using the ‘green whistle’ – a methoxyflurane painkiller device – capturing his discomfort from the facial fracture. The clip, now deleted from social media, highlighted the severity of his injury.

Despite the pain, Walsh later filmed himself in a car park, helping several men push a broken-down ute. With his damaged face visible, he encouraged the group, shouting ‘come on the boys’ as the vehicle started.

Coach’s Concerns and Recovery Outlook

Broncos coach Michael Maguire expressed worry post-match: ‘Reece has gone to hospital to get a scan just below his eye so we will have to wait and see on that.’

Recent updates confirm Walsh requires surgery on the fracture and faces up to six weeks sidelined, ruling him out of Friday’s clash with North Queensland at Suncorp Stadium.

Other Broncos Injuries

Captain Adam Reynolds sustained a groin strain and underwent scans, while replacement Ben Hunt battled a knee injury. Hunt noted halftime feedback from the doctor: ‘Early mail from the doc at halftime is he thinks I’ve stretched my medial a little bit. I’ll go and catch up with him now.’

Match Highlights and Titans’ Frustrations

Gold Coast led a tight contest at halftime, trailing 8-6. Brisbane’s Ezra Mam and Kotoni Staggs shone in the second half. A lapse allowed Staggs to collect a Hunt bomb, leading to tries by Xavier Willison and Gehamat Shibasaki, pushing the score to 16-6.

The Titans suffered heartbreak when AJ Brimson’s try was disallowed due to a forward pass from Lachlan Ilias. Jesse Arthars, shifted to fullback after Walsh’s departure, scored soon after.

Gold Coast coach Josh Hannay lamented: ‘It is a hard game and when you earn your opportunity and ice it, and it gets taken away, it is frustrating for the players. You have got to try and brush that and we just didn’t … so that’s a learn for us and a work-on.’

Walsh dazzled early with a 15-meter bomb he caught himself for a try amid defenders. He nearly scored another stunner, racing 90 meters but stepping into touch. The win propelled the defending premiers into the top eight for the first time this season.
