Former Masters winner Danny Willett believed Scottie Scheffler aimed to overpower rivals with an intensely spicy dish at his Champions Dinner. The 2016 champion attended Scheffler’s first such event three years prior, following the Texan’s 2022 victory at Augusta National.

The Ultra-Spicy Mexican Tortilla Soup

Raised in Dallas since age six, Scheffler selected a Mexican tortilla soup that delivered extreme heat. Willett described it as “f***ing rocket fuel,” adding, “I asked him if he was trying to kill us all off. Brutal. We’re sat at that table and sweating.”

Reactions from Golf Legends

Six-time major champion Sir Nick Faldo admitted, “One spoonful was too much for me. It was way too hot, too spicy.” Sandy Lyle, the 1988 Masters victor, noted he swabbed perspiration from his forehead, while Fred Couples clutched his throat in surprise.

The late Fuzzy Zoeller, 1979 champion who passed in November 2025, said he “about gagged” on the soup. Two-time winner Jose Maria Olazabal acknowledged it packed “a little bit of kick.”

Scheffler conceded the soup exceeded his expectations for spiciness.

Impact and Menu Adjustments

The bold choice coincided with Scheffler’s 10th-place finish at the 2023 Masters, won by Jon Rahm. Scheffler claimed a second green jacket in 2024.

For the 2025 Champions Dinner, he swapped the tortilla soup for milder Texas-style chili, avoiding further complaints while honoring his roots.

Scheffler returns to Augusta this week, ready to dominate the competition on the course.
