Arsenal legend Thierry Henry praises the Gunners as the most solid team in the Champions League but warns that a lack of creativity could derail their title hopes.

Mikel Arteta’s Premier League leaders secured a 1-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Sporting in Lisbon. Kai Havertz scored an injury-time winner after linking up with substitute Gabriel Martinelli, giving Arsenal a slim advantage ahead of the return leg at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal entered the match on the back of two consecutive defeats—their first of the season—losing the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City and an FA Cup tie to Championship side Southampton. David Raya’s clean sheet marked Arsenal’s fifth goal conceded in 11 Champions League games this season.
The Gunners also hold the Premier League’s best defensive record, allowing just 22 goals in 31 matches.
Henry Highlights Strengths and Weaknesses
Henry identifies Arsenal’s team solidity and set-piece prowess as key strengths. “They are strong as a team and very solid,” Henry stated. “For me, they are the most solid team in the Champions League.”
However, he expresses concern over their attacking output. “If the defense doesn’t work, I don’t think we are creating enough at times to hurt teams, and that might be an issue,” Henry added.
Post-match, Henry noted, “It’s better than coming back with a 0-0. There wasn’t much in the game or a lot of creativity, but they did what they had to do. They won away from home—let’s see what happens at the Emirates.”
Arteta Reflects on the Win
Arteta lauds the impact of his substitutes. “It’s been the story of the season—how important the finishers have been for us,” he said. “Gabi came on and made a huge impact; Kai the same; Max the same.”
The Arsenal manager acknowledges the challenge of winning away against a Sporting side unbeaten in 16 home games. “We had moments where we were very dominant and had our chances, but we lacked threat in and around the box,” Arteta explained. “We needed to be more efficient with our last pass, and David made two key saves.”
Looking ahead, Arteta stresses caution: “One hundred percent, the job is only half done. The players know how tough it’s going to be at the Emirates.” He also thanks the traveling fans for their support.
