Operational planning notes for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s upcoming Australia visit detail stops in Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney. The document confirms the trip is privately funded, ensuring no expense to Australian taxpayers.

Liam Maguire, the couple’s chief communications officer and a military veteran with longstanding ties to Prince Harry, authored the notes. He emphasizes the tour’s focus on veterans’ support and mental health initiatives while addressing potential criticisms.

Tour Itinerary

The four-day schedule begins next Tuesday in Melbourne. Highlights include joint appearances at a children’s hospital and an Invictus Australia event on Sydney Harbour. The couple will also connect with communities through veterans and mental health programs.

Meghan Markle will visit a women’s homelessness shelter on her own. Prince Harry plans a solo stop at an AFL club in Melbourne, attendance at a rugby union match in Sydney, and a brief trip to Canberra without his wife.

Specific dates and times remain undisclosed for security reasons. The itinerary notably excludes Meghan’s participation in the ‘Her Best Life’ retreat at Sydney’s InterContinental Hotel in Coogee Beach from April 17-19, separating official-style engagements from her personal lifestyle ventures.

Funding and Responses to Critics

The visit stems from invitations by various Australian groups and receives full private funding. In a prepared Q&A section, Maguire responds to claims of it being a publicity tour: “The programme is rooted in long-standing areas of work for the Duke and Duchess, with a clear focus on amplifying organisations delivering measurable impact. The visit prioritises listening, learning and supporting communities rather than promotion.”

Key Differences from Royal Traditions

Unlike traditional royal tours, the Sussexes will skip public walkabouts due to security costs for maintaining order. Their children, Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, will not join the trip.

Maguire, who has collaborated with Harry since the 2014 Invictus Games, now leads communications for both from his base split between London and Cornwall, with a team in California. He encourages media inquiries via WhatsApp amid efforts to improve relations.

The couple last visited Australia in 2018 during an official tour, when Meghan was pregnant with Archie.
