Holiday travelers face mounting uncertainty for summer plans as potential jet fuel shortages loom over European aviation. A fragile ceasefire holds, yet vessels remain blocked from the Strait of Hormuz, sparking fears of prolonged disruptions to global fuel supplies.

h2>EU Officials Raise Alarm

EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas highlights growing worries from the airport sector about jet fuel availability. In a recent memo, he stresses the urgency for proactive monitoring and action. “If passage through the Strait of Hormuz fails to resume significantly and stably within the next three weeks, systemic jet fuel shortages will become reality across the EU,” the memo states.

Air travel suffered early blows from the conflict, with numerous airlines canceling flights over southwest Asia and stranding thousands of passengers. While other holiday destinations have escaped major issues so far, broader ripple effects now emerge.

Airline Concerns Mount

European budget carriers voice apprehensions about future supplies. A Ryanair spokesperson notes: “We anticipate no near-term fuel shortages, but conditions remain fluid. Suppliers currently secure deliveries through mid-May. A swift end to the Iran conflict would prevent disruptions, though extended closure of the Hormuz Strait into May or June could risk supplies at certain European airports.”

Peace Talks in Focus

Spotlight shifts to upcoming peace negotiations in Pakistan this weekend, where U.S. and Iranian officials aim to de-escalate tensions. Discussions will address Israel’s ongoing strikes in Lebanon, which have claimed hundreds of civilian lives despite the ceasefire. On Friday, former President Trump announced U.S. forces are rearming, casting doubts on a rapid resolution.
