Ipswich delivers a crucial 2-0 victory against rivals Norwich at Carrow Road, propelling the team into the top two spots in the Championship standings. With two games in hand over competitors, Town strengthens its automatic promotion campaign through first-half strikes from Jaden Philogene and George Hirst, securing a long-awaited double over their East Anglian foes.

Defensive Masterclass Frustrates Norwich

Norwich dominates possession yet struggles to create clear opportunities, thanks to Ipswich’s solid defensive performance that limits high-quality chances. The loss dashes Norwich’s slim play-off hopes, though a projected top-10 finish remains an impressive turnaround from their early-season position in the relegation zone.

Controversial Penalty Opens Scoring

Ipswich takes the lead after 11 minutes via a debated penalty. Anis Ben Slimane unintentionally clips Jack Taylor while clearing in the box, prompting referee Anthony Backhouse to award the spot-kick. Philogene coolly slots it past goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic.

Kovacevic then tips away Hirst’s header from a deep free-kick, as Norwich gains momentum in a high-intensity clash, pressing Ipswich back. Despite controlling the ball, Norwich rarely threatens, with Pelle Mattsson’s fierce shot the standout moment, comfortably saved by Christian Walton.

Hirst Doubles the Lead Before Half-Time

Kovacevic denies Hirst again with a sharp foot save near the interval, but Ipswich strikes twice moments later. Darnell Furlong’s long throw from the left finds Hirst, who volleys home unmarked for a commanding advantage.

Second-Half Pressure Yields Nothing

Norwich responds at halftime with attacking changes, introducing Mo Toure and Oscar Schwartau. Slimane tests Walton early on a counter, and Toure misses wide from a promising spot. Marcelino Nunez’s substitution from the Ipswich bench intensifies the atmosphere, though he picks up a yellow card during a tense appearance.

Ipswich nearly extends the lead on a quick break, but Taylor meets another fine Kovacevic stop. Nunez exits shortly after, preserving the clean sheet as Ipswich holds firm for the vital win.
