Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has outlined the key requirements for him to commit his long-term future to the club. The 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder remains a pivotal figure since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020. This season, he leads the team with eight goals and 16 assists amid their push for Champions League qualification.

Contract Situation

Fernandes nearly left last summer, turning down a lucrative offer from Al-Hilal worth around £1 million per week in wages plus a £100 million transfer fee. With only 12 months remaining on his current deal, United hold an option to extend it by another year. Despite limited silverware— just two trophies in six years—Fernandes emphasizes competition as essential.

Drive for Trophies and Competition

“I tell the club I want to compete,” Fernandes stated. “Everyone who joins Manchester United aims to win every trophy. No one expects to fight for just one or two over six years. You want to contend for all of them.”

He highlighted the absence of a Premier League title since 2013 as “not normal” and “too long.” Players arrive drawn by the club’s storied history and the expectation of success.

“You can’t promise me a Premier League win—that’s impossible,” he added. “But promise competitiveness and a shot at the end. That’s all I need. Then it’s on me to deliver my best and elevate everyone to become the club we aspire to be.”

Verdict on Michael Carrick

United’s trajectory hinges on the managerial role, with Michael Carrick excelling since replacing Ruben Amorim in January. The former midfielder has secured seven victories in 10 matches, fueling calls for a permanent appointment after his interim stint until season’s end.

Fernandes praised Carrick’s impact but stressed sustainability. “If we finish as we hope, it looks promising, but it’s not the full picture,” he said. “The question is: Can we maintain this form for an entire season? Spells of success are easy; consistency over 38 games is the real challenge—something we haven’t achieved since I arrived.”

Manchester United sit third in the Premier League, seven points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, with the top five securing Champions League spots. They face Leeds at Old Trafford on Monday night, three months after the fixture that marked Amorim’s final game.
