Liverpool’s challenging season hit another low with a 2-0 home defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, resulting in a 4-0 aggregate elimination. French forward Hugo Ekitike suffered a suspected Achilles rupture in the second half, forcing him off on a stretcher and ending his debut campaign at Anfield prematurely.

Ekitike Faces Extended Absence

Sources confirm the 23-year-old France international will miss several months due to the injury sustained against the French champions. The severity rules him out of the June World Cup and the early stages of next season, denying him a major tournament debut.

Transfer Implications for Liverpool

This development carries significant weight for Liverpool’s summer business. With Mohamed Salah set to depart on a free transfer, Federico Chiesa likely following suit, and Andy Robertson also exiting without a fee, the forward line could thin to Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo, and Rio Ngumoha heading into the 2026/27 campaign. Such a scenario may compel decisive action in the transfer market.

Slot Addresses Transitional Challenges

Arne Slot described the club as in transition after the PSG loss, highlighting the difficulty of losing key players like Salah, Robertson, and Trent Alexander-Arnold for free. He stated post-match to Prime Video: “Now we are losing Mo and Andy Robertson on a free transfer as we lost Trent and this model of the club means we need to sell, usually, to buy. So it’s a big challenge. It was already last season. It’s going to be a challenge in the summer again.”

Slot emphasized the club’s successful history with its self-sustaining model: “This club has also shown many times that this model works and we can be very successful with this model.”

Despite confirming a trophyless second season at Anfield, the Dutch manager remains optimistic: “I think we have signed very good and talented players. Now let’s hope they are all fit. That most of them go into their second season in the Premier League. As I’ve said many times, the future looks really good, especially if we can add a few good signings after the players leaving this summer.”
