Five years after departing the Premier League, former Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, now 36, embraces a markedly different lifestyle. The Icelandic playmaker transferred to Everton from Swansea City in 2017 for a club-record £45 million. He anchored the midfield at Goodison Park for four seasons until Rafael Benitez excluded him from the Premier League squad in September 2021, signaling the decline of his time on Merseyside. His contract expired the following summer, ending his English chapter.

Career Setbacks and Icelandic Revival

Sigurdsson’s tenure in England faced scrutiny following an arrest by Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of child sex offenses, with charges dropped in April 2023. Though cleared, the incident impacted his reputation and opportunities in top-flight football.

After a transitional period, he signed with Danish club Lyngby Boldklub in June 2023, following discussions with DC United under Wayne Rooney. His stint lasted just six months amid a managerial shift that sidelined him. Returning to Iceland, he first joined Valur before transferring to Reykjavik rivals Vikingur in February 2025.

In the ongoing Besta deild karla season, Sigurdsson scored Vikingur’s goal in a 1-1 draw against Breidablik. Earlier, he competed in Europa Conference League qualifiers, where Vikingur fell to Brondby.

Continued International Influence

Sigurdsson remains vital for Iceland internationally. Recent friendlies included a 4-0 loss to Mexico and a 1-1 draw with Haiti. After a three-year absence, he returned for Euro 2024 qualifiers against Luxembourg and Liechtenstein, affirming his national team role.

Net Worth and Family Life

Sigurdsson holds a net worth nearing £25 million, accumulated primarily during Premier League stints, including £120,000 weekly at Everton—over £6 million annually. At Vikingur, his salary drops to about £2,200 per week (£114,000 yearly), akin to England’s lower divisions.

Off the field, he shares life with wife Alexandra Iversdottir, a model and former Miss Iceland. She represented Iceland at Miss World, securing a top-15 spot and the Miss World Sports title in a decathlon event. Married nearly seven years after a 2019 Lake Como ceremony, the couple met in 2010 during his Reading days. Their daughter, Melros Mia Gylfadottir, arrived in May 2021.
