Dianna Russini has resigned from her role as The Athletic’s lead NFL reporter following controversy over photos showing her with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. The images, which depict the pair holding hands and relaxing poolside at an adults-only resort, prompted Russini to describe them as a ‘sexist attack on a female reporter in a male-dominated field’ when she addressed her superiors.
Denials and Investigation Details
Both Russini, 43, and Vrabel, who are married with children, firmly deny any affair. They maintain the trip involved a larger group of friends. However, Russini provided no supporting evidence to verify this claim during discussions with The Athletic leadership, according to an analysis.
The organization initially defended her position but placed her on leave after reviewing additional details. Russini chose to resign this week, ahead of her contract’s June expiration, refusing to let the matter overshadow her career.
Resignation Statement
In her resignation letter, Russini declared: ‘I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career. I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published.’
Career Background and NFL Impact
Russini, previously the NFL’s most prominent female reporter, joined The Athletic in 2023 after nearly a decade at ESPN in roles such as SportsCenter anchor, NFL analyst, and insider. She first connected professionally with Vrabel while covering the Tennessee Titans during his tenure as head coach there, with no prior indications of anything beyond a professional relationship.
The scandal continues to reverberate through the NFL as the draft unfolds in Pittsburgh. Vrabel has avoided media since the photos surfaced, skipping the Patriots’ pre-draft press conference he typically leads.
Patriots vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf noted: ‘He’s been in there with us, this round of meetings, probably a little more than he was last year.’
Patriots Support and Vrabel’s Record
The NFL has no plans to investigate Vrabel, and the Patriots stand firmly behind him. A three-time Super Bowl champion as a player with the team, Vrabel delivered a standout debut season as head coach, transforming a 4-13 squad into a Super Bowl contender before a narrow loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the championship game.
Personal Lives
Russini married Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt in 2020. Vrabel wed Jen, whom he met at Ohio State. Owner Robert Kraft and his wife Dana Blumberg recently posed with Vrabel and Jen during his head coaching announcement.
In an unrelated incident, Russini reportedly assisted an elderly man and his dog after a car accident in New Jersey, where she was driving behind them.
