Wellington declares a state of emergency following torrential overnight rains that deliver the heaviest downpour ever recorded in New Zealand’s capital. Low-lying neighborhoods face evacuation orders amid flash floods, landslides, and widespread road closures.

Mayor’s Urgent Warning

Wellington Mayor Andrew Little describes the event as unprecedented, noting 77mm of rain fell in under an hour. “I’ve never known anything like” the intense rainfall, he states on social media. The southern suburbs suffer severe flooding as stormwater systems overwhelm.

“You’ll be aware there has been serious downpour in Wellington, particularly in the southern suburbs overnight, very serious flooding in many places,” Little adds. “A lot of that flooding was the stormwater system being overwhelmed.” Surface water lingers in spots, though much dissipates. He urges residents to skip non-essential travel: “This is a day to be really careful if you’re going out and about. If you can avoid travel, then please do so, but if you have to travel, then be very careful.”

Emergency Response Escalates

Rescue teams handle over 150 weather-related incidents, including home inundations and slips in areas like Newtown, Island Bay, and Kingston. Fire and Emergency New Zealand activates its regional coordination center to bolster operations.

Deputy National Commander Megan Stiffler warns: “Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Do not try to walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater. Do not drive through floodwater. You are putting yourself at risk, and risking the lives of those who come to your rescue.”

A man vanishes in Karori, sparking searches around his flooded property. Several schools shut down amid the chaos.

Ongoing Weather Threats

Heavy rain alerts persist through Tuesday night across Wellington and Wairarapa. Meteorologist Katie Lyons highlights dangers: “Following the severe downpours over the last few days and the upcoming forecast rainfalls, there is an increased threat to life from dangerous river conditions, significant flooding and slips, with especially hazardous driving conditions.” Some roads turn impassable, stranding communities, while south coast seas grow treacherous.

Wellington Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Joint Committee Chair Anita Baker emphasizes: “This is a serious weather event with ongoing and evolving risks. The state of emergency gives responders the powers and coordination needed to keep people safe, support evacuations where required, and manage impacts across the region.”

Expert Analysis on Flooding

Dr. Emily Lane, Chief Scientist for Flooding, Extreme Weather, and Space Hazards at Earth Sciences NZ, explains pluvial flooding: Cities like Wellington feature impermeable surfaces that prevent water absorption, forcing reliance on stormwater drains. Overloaded systems send excess water overland to the sea. “Unfortunately, short and relatively localised but very intense events like those we have seen over the past few days are the type of event expected to increase the most with climate change.”

The mayor stresses vigilance: “We’ve had flooding, slips and evacuations. There’s another big weather system moving in this afternoon, so we need to just stay alert and be prepared. I’m taking this very seriously, and so is our whole region.”
