The Boston Red Sox dismiss manager Alex Cora and four coaches amid the team’s struggles in the early MLB season. The moves target hitting coach Peter Fatse, third-base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin.

Key Reassignment

Game-planning coach Jason Varitek, a two-time World Series champion with the Red Sox, shifts to a new role within the organization.

Timing of Decision

The announcement follows a 17-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, which ended a four-game losing streak. Despite the win, the Red Sox hold a 10-17 record, sit last in the AL East, and suffered a three-game sweep by the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.

Cora’s Tenure Ends

Cora, who managed the Red Sox in two stints since returning in 2021, guided the team to a World Series title in 2018. The 50-year-old leaves with a 619-541 record at Fenway Park.

Owner’s Statement

Red Sox owner John Henry expresses gratitude in a statement: “Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude. He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways. These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived. I want to thank Alex, our coaches, and their families for everything they have given to this organization. They have been part of this club in a way that goes beyond the field, and they will always have our respect and gratitude.”

Interim Leadership

Chad Tracy, manager of Boston’s Triple-A affiliate in Worcester, steps in as interim manager.
