A woman captured widespread attention online after grabbing several wine bottles during the chaotic evacuation at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton when gunfire broke out near the event’s main ballroom on Saturday night.
Shooting Details Emerge
Authorities identified the gunman as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from California. He allegedly approached a security checkpoint armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. The suspect fired at a Secret Service agent at close range, but the agent’s bulletproof vest prevented serious injury.
Investigators determine the attack carried political motivations, targeting administration officials, potentially including the president. Documents found on Allen described him as a “Friendly Federal Assassin” and criticized current administration policies. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that initial findings support this assessment.
Viral Video Sparks Debate
Amid the panic, an unidentified blonde woman in a long black fur coat headed straight for a table laden with untouched bottles. The early-evening shooting left ample alcohol available in the ballroom. While unclear if she had purchased the drinks, no evidence suggests wrongdoing.
The footage quickly spread across social media, dividing viewers. Critics called it inappropriate, with one user stating: “This is absolutely disgusting. Members of the press were caught stealing bottles of wine in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.” Another remarked: “The President almost just got assassinated and members of the media are using the opportunity to steal bottles of wine.”
Supporters saw humor or justification, noting the $350+ per-plate cost and early cancellation. One commenter wrote: “They paid $350+ a plate, and the night got canceled early, free wine tax refund is fair game.” Another defended: “How is this stealing? They were placed on the tables for dinner. They were meant to be consumed. Everything was already paid for.” A third added: “The highlight of the shooting is all the press and influencers yoinking bottles of wine and champagne. Good on them for that.” A fourth quipped: “This is absolutely hilarious. After the assassination attempt, this woman just snags a couple of bottles of wine. She’s got her priorities figured out.”
Event Abruptly Ends
The dinner halted immediately following the altercation. President Trump later addressed the nation from the White House, praising the Secret Service’s swift response and calling for an end to political violence.
