Hundreds of officers conducted raids in Crewe, Cheshire, leading to several arrests in a major probe into claims of sexual abuse, forced marriage, and modern slavery within a religious community.

Raid Targets Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light

The operation focused on suspects linked to the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, a group with headquarters at Webb House, a former orphanage in Crewe housing around 150 residents. Authorities also searched two additional properties connected to the suspects.

The investigation began after a woman reported rape and sexual abuse from her time in the group in 2023. She came forward in March this year. All alleged offenses center on this single victim.

Chief Superintendent’s Statement

Chief Superintendent Gareth Wrigley of Cheshire Constabulary stated: “Today’s operation stems from a thorough investigation into reports of serious sexual offenses, forced marriage, and modern slavery involving members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light in Crewe.

“Those arrested belong to the group, but this probe targets the specific allegations reported to us, not the religion itself.

“We handle all sexual assault reports with utmost seriousness and work tirelessly to deliver justice.

“Post-arrest, we collaborate with partners to offer safeguarding and support to other group members.

“Residents face no broader risk, with increased patrols providing reassurance. Anyone concerned should contact an officer.”

Group Background and Safeguards

The Ahmadi community relocated from Sweden to Cheshire in 2021, establishing their base at Webb House. Among the residents are 56 home-schooled children, for whom welfare centers now provide care and protection.
