Gemma Atkinson shares a humorous anecdote about her fiancé Gorka Marquez frustrating her at home, coinciding with his recent departure from Strictly Come Dancing.
Gorka’s Official Exit
The 35-year-old Spanish dancer confirms his permanent exit from the BBC show amid major cast shake-ups ahead of the 24th series. “I’ve decided that now is the time to hang up my dance shoes and say goodbye to Strictly Come Dancing,” Gorka states in his announcement.
Gorka and Gemma met as partners on the 2017 series, where sparks flew. The couple now raises their children, six-year-old Mia and two-year-old Thiago, and co-hosts the Lost In Translation podcast.
Gemma’s Podcast Revelation
In a recent podcast clip, Gemma recounts Gorka’s return from New York. “Gorka came back from New York,” she begins. “I moan about everything,” Gorka interjects, prompting Gemma to reply, “No… You walked around the house like an inspector doing a check on a tenant.”
She describes him inspecting the home, then muttering, “I’ve been away for one week, and you take my shelf.” Gemma realizes their children had rearranged items during play. As she heads upstairs, she mumbles to herself, “Shut the f*** up Gorka,” and stomps away, adding, “You might have heard me.”
Full Statement on Departure
Gorka elaborates on Instagram: “After last year’s decision to step down as a full-time professional due to scheduling conflicts between Strictly and Dancing With The Stars Spain, I’ve decided that now is the time to hang up my dance shoes and say goodbye to Strictly Come Dancing.”
He expresses gratitude: “Being part of the show has been so much more than just a professional opportunity—over the past 10 years, it allowed me to build a career from my passion, find love, start a family, and make lifelong friends.” Gorka plans to join the Strictly Pro Tour and support from the sidelines.
Broader Show Changes
Gorka’s exit follows departures by fellow pros Luba Mushtuk, Karen Hauer, Nadiya Bychkova, and Michelle Tsiakkas. Replacements remain unannounced.
Long-time hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman step down after the 2025 Christmas Special, with new presenters forthcoming. Producers seek a fresh start, prioritizing dancers with strong online presences to attract younger viewers. For instance, Nadiya Bychkova (19,000 followers) exits, while Dianne Buswell (966,000 followers) stays. Similarly, Karen Hauer (9,000 followers) leaves as Alexis Warr (190,000 followers) joins.
Gorka’s 2025 stint judging the Spanish version, Bailando Con Las Estrellas, caused scheduling issues, limiting him to ensemble appearances on Strictly.
